On June 18th, we had the privilege of organizing a special event for 300 children in the village of Run Ta Aek; a place where access to education and opportunity is severely limited. In collaboration with PlantWaterGrow, a local NGO led by Jasiel Ross, we created a day full of color, fun and connection.

Many families in Run Ta Aek have been relocated there after being evicted from informal settlements in areas like the Ankor Wat district. They were forced to leave due to unclear land ownership and were moved to this remote area by the government. Unfortunately, Run Ta Aek offers very little in terms of infrastructure, public services, or educational support; making everyday life particularly difficult for its residents.
At the heart of our event was creativity and joy. Each child received their own pair of flip-flops, which they got to paint and personalize. Beyond the art, we had games, activities and opportunities for the kids to just be kids, to laugh, play, and connect. Over 20 volunteers and 20 teachers joined hands to make the day unforgettable.
The event took place at the local school, one of the few public spaces available, and ended with a shared meal of rice and chicken, bringing everyone together around the table.
This day reminded us of the power of small gestures, and how something as simple as a pair of painted flip-flops can bring joy, dignity and a sense of ownership to a child’s life.
At cafe aris, we believe that cafés can be more than just a place to enjoy a good coffee, they can be a place where stories start, and where change begins. All of our profits go into supporting social projects like this one.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
